A night light that does not look like a night light

This light is for the bedside table or the landing where you want light at three in the morning and not a plastic plug-in shaped like an animal.

A linen cylinder shade sits on a turned wood base: 21cm tall on a 10cm foot, so it takes up about as much room as a mug. The linen is what does the work — it takes the hard edge off the light and glows evenly all the way round rather than throwing a bright patch on the ceiling. It runs off USB, so it plugs into the same charger as your phone, and the switch sits on the cable where you can find it in the dark without knocking anything over.

On a landing it is enough to get downstairs by. In a nursery it is enough to change a nappy by and not enough to wake anyone properly.
